Who am I?

Hi, I'm Alessandro Mangone, a Senior Data Engineer based in Zurich, Switzerland.

What do I do?

I help organizations turn data and technology into business value. My focus is not just on building systems, but on defining the strategy behind them: understanding where the business is going and shaping the data architecture, platforms, and products that get it there.

I currently work at Climeworks, where we fight climate change through Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology. I lead the development of the IoT hardware/software solutions that bring plant data into our systems, and I co-designed the Databricks data platform and the streaming pipelines that transform raw sensor data into the KPIs the business runs on.

How I work

Technology is a means, not an end. I choose tools, whether that's a data platform, a cloud provider, or AI, based on the problem they solve and the value they create, not the other way around.

I believe in short feedback loops: shipping incrementally, staying close to stakeholders, and letting their input shape the product as it evolves. And because strategy is only as good as its execution, I hold a high bar for software quality and reliability. Practices like Test Driven Development and Pair Programming are part of how I work, and automated CI/CD pipelines are a given.

My toolbox

My background is in Big Data and software engineering: Spark, Kafka, Airflow, and Databricks on cloud platforms like AWS and Azure, mostly written in Python and TypeScript. I also work hands-on with infrastructure as code (Terraform) and data visualization (echarts, uPlot), because understanding the technology deeply is what makes strategic decisions credible. Increasingly, I leverage AI both as a tool in my own workflow and as a capability in the products I help shape.

The purpose of this website is to have a personal space where I can share ideas, projects, thoughts and discoveries.
